Chapter 12

“AND YOU’RE JUST PREPARED to live with it?”

Greg was looking at me as though I were a traitor to all humanity. In fact, if I had told him I just finished devouring ten young virgins alive for breakfast, his reaction would still probably have been less intense.

“Yes, I’m just prepared to live with it,” I replied. “Because these Elves are stronger and more experienced. We don’t even have 1% of their power or their potential. Walk around the village. Talk to everybody else. They’ll tell you just how sweet life is for them. And I’m being sarcastic about the “sweet” part, in case you didn’t catch that! At any moment, an Elf can come by and kill any of them, just for the hell of it — just because that Elf happens to be in a bad mood. Including another Elf, by the way. Don’t you see the problem here? They respawn! Like some computer game! And we’re nothing but NPCs in that game. I mean, that’s literally what they call us.”

“But that’s WRONG!” Greg jumped to his feet. “People should still have some sort of rights, if they got dragged into this world against their will!”

“Nobody got dragged anywhere,” I corrected him. “Our whole world transformed into this release. Earth doesn’t exist anymore. It’s been destroyed. We’re all that remains of humanity.”

“Which is even more reason to fight for our future!” He growled, clenching his fists. “We can’t submit to tyranny like this!”

“Yeah, start running your mouth about freedom of speech,” I snickered. “Listen, Greg — nobody’s interested in you at all, until you become somebody. Keep your head down, get a class, become stronger. THEN do something! Getting upset right now isn’t going to help anybody at all.”

In response, the kid just shot me an incinerating glare, and then walked off. Our conversation was over, as (apparently) was our brief acquaintanceship. With that attitude, though, I knew he wasn’t the kind of person I could work with anyway. We had both been in the game for the same amount of time, and yet he had somehow failed to realize that Earth was gone. There was nothing we could do to get it back.

He was still talking about human rights... It was almost funny. I was too busy worrying about surviving until the sun rose the next morning. I didn’t have time to worry about my rights.

“Come with me, NPC!” A voice boomed out from behind me so abruptly that I actually jumped.

Turning around, I saw an Elf. And a pretty strange one, at that. When he stopped moving, he seemed to blend in with the world around him. He wasn’t moving anywhere, but my eyes seemed to slip right past his outline when I tried to look at him. The moment he moved, however, I could see where he was immediately. What is this, I wondered — some sort of class ability? Like eye aversion? Maybe some sort of invisibility, or this world’s version of it? Those were the only possible explanations I could think of.
